Embracing the future: eBooks and Digital Publishing

@6000 over on 6000 miles from civilisation discovered a fantastic video on Youtube of a 1-year-old girl struggling to operate a print magazine in the same way she operates her dad’s iPad. He posted the following quote from her dad:

Technology codes our minds, changes our OS. Apple products have done this extensively. The video shows how magazines are now useless and impossible to understand, for digital natives. It shows real life clip of a 1-year old, growing among touch screens and print. And how the latter becomes irrelevant. Medium is message.

He further postulates that although books are great to hold and touch and smell, we should not let emotional responses hold us back from embracing current and future technologies. He also notes that the ability to interact with technology and the internet seems just as important to children today as learning to read books were to him “in the old days”.

What do you think? Will digital publishing be hardcoded into the current generation’s worldview? Or will the nostalgia of printed books win out over the novelty of digital books?
