Dear Bookclub members
It should be paramount to any organisation that mistakes are acknowledged and that the person at the top ultimately carries the responsibility. In this case, I feel that I have been insensitive to some of the bookclubs in South Africa where funding may be more important or more critical to the ongoing welfare of the bookclub than in others.
However, we cannot make a rule for some bookclubs and not for others. It would seem to me that we have been too draconian in cutting discounts to bookclubs and I have agreed with my staff that we should make a change to the discount rules that were announced very recently. The new rule, which we will need to review annually, and we will do so on 1 November each year going forward, proposes more generous terms than those prevailing at the moment.
The new discount structure per transaction is as follows:-‐
3 books = 15% discount
4 to 7 books = 20% discount
8 books plus = 25% discount
I am painfully aware that we have a real commitment to the community to foster and encourage reading at all levels. Bookclubs in South Africa are a vital part to that commitment and I am pleased that we have:-‐
1. Acknowledged the error of our ways; and
2. That I and my staff have agreed a new structure to which we are all committed.
I wish you all the very best festive season and I hope that 2017 will be one in which South Africans of all colours can hold hands again and treat each other with kindness and respect.
Yours most sincerely
Chief Executive Officer
