Planet 51

Planet 51, while not earth-shattering in concept, is a fun film filled with humour that will keep kids of all ages entertained.

The story revolves around a small planet in a different galaxy where little green humanoids live in a setting that strongly reminds you of 1950s America. The white picket fence town with its neighbourly inhabitants live in peace and harmony with their biggest fear being that of an alien invasion. Oh yes, on this planet, it also rains rocks.

Our hero, Lem (Justin Long) just landed his dream job as a tour guide and lecturer at the town’s planetarium. While the rest of the people fear a imminent alien invasion, propagated by the film industry, Lem tries his best to teach people about the wonders of the universe. He is your average kid, still living with his parents, with a crush on his next-door neighbour Neera (Jessica Biel).

But the arrival of the American astronaut, Chuck Baker (Dwayne Johnson) turns his world upside down. Chuck lands on Planet 51, believing it to be uninhabited, thanks to data sent through by a rock obsessed, but lovable probe named Rover. This sets him off on a mission where he has to avoid capture by the military and convince the inhabitants of Planet 51 that this alien is a friend.

The film is made by the humour. Where a lot of animation films rely on slapstick humour and forced jokes, Planet 51 employs witty humour in the dialogue. That’s not to sat that there isn’t a fair amount of slapstick involved, but it is nice to see a film that does not solely bank on it to make the film funny.

All in all, Planet 51 is good fun that will surely entertain young and old.
