Melancholia: A Beautiful Movie about the End of the World

Melancholia

Melancholia begins with various scenes shot in slow motion: A lady in a wedding dress walking through grey lint; a woman carrying a small boy across a golf course, her feet seeping halfway into the soil with every step; a horse collapsing; images of space; the planet Melancholia colliding with Earth.

The plot revolves around Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), two siblings, at the time during and after Justine’s wedding.  In part one, Justine and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) celebrate their matrimony at an elaborate golf estate owned by her sister, Claire, and Claire’s husband John (Kiefer Sutherland). The reception, beautiful but at times comically awkward, lasts from dusk till dawn. Part two follows Justine and her feelings of depressions after her brief and failed marriage. She moves in with Claire, John and their son Leo. Together, the four of them prepare to witness the most spectacular astronomical event ever.

Meloncholia is a beautiful movie about the end of the world created by Lars von Trier. It was released on the South African circuit on Friday, 16 March 2012 and is expected to be released on DVD in April/May.
