Calling all Geeks! It’s time to start preparing yourself (and your wallet) for the first in a line of fantastic conventions set for this year. I am, of course, talking about the spectacular geek-fest that is Upcon!
Date: April 20 at 9:00am until April 21 at 5:00pm
Venue: University of Pretoria Convention Centre
Entrance: R30 for the weekend
Upcon is hosted by the GGC (Great Geek Collective), a society created especially for geeks who wish to be part of a community and take part in all the geeky goodness that Gauteng has to offer. Dina Steyn, one of the founding members of the GGC, had this to say about this years Upcon:
Upcon boasts its usual complement of activities: anime screening, cosplay competition, tradable card gaming (specifically MTG) and role-playing modules. However, we’ve also got some new (confirmed) beauties coming up:
Upcon is proud to host two official Magic: The Gathering tournaments that are recognised internationally: The Pro Tour Qualifier and the *drumroll* World Cup Qualifier. Besides being significant internationally, the World Cup Qualifier also means that players battle it out until way after everyone else has run out of energy.
We also have board game demos and tournaments as well as Upcon’s very first HeroClix tournament.
The theme for this year’s Upcon is Super Spies and attendees are always encouraged to dress according to the theme (those who are not taking part in any of the Cosplay competitions or activities).
